Life Cycle Events

At KAM Isaiah Israel we conduct Brit Milah and baby namings, Consecrations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, marriages, and funerals.

Brit Milah (Circumcision) and Baby Naming:  The clergy of KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation are available to assist with brit milah and the naming of your baby, either in your home or at the synagogue as part of a regularly secheduled service.  For brit milah, we work with several mohalim (ritual circumcisers) in the area.  We recommend that you contact the clergy a couple of months before the expected birth or arrival of your child in order to make arrangements.

Consecration:  Students in kindergarten and above who are beginning their religious education at KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation are invited to participate in the Consecration ceremony as part of our observance of Atzeret-Simchat Torah.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah:  Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies are held on Saturday morning as part of our regular Shabbat worship.  We will make every effort to accommodate children with special needs.

The B’nei Mitzvah program includes:

Mini-retreats
Beginning in the 6th grade, there will be a series of “mini-retreats” held on Saturday and/or Sunday afternoon for the B’nei Mitzvah student and his/her family, that will be led by the Rabbi, Cantor and Director of Religious Education.  In these sessions, we will focus on what it means to become Bar or Bat Mitzvah in a Reform synagogue in the 21st century; and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the context of the family;  the structure and meaning of the siddur, the Jewish prayerbook.

Jewish Values
In this class students will be presented with realistic ethical problems that are submitted to the test of Jewish law in order to find “the right solution”. Students are confronted with a series of moral dilemmas, participate in discussions on values and ethics, and take a look into the Talmud, the codes and the wisdom of the Jewish legal process.

Parashat ha-shavua
Students will study the parashat ha-shavua (Torah portion of the week).  Each week the class will concentrate on two verses of the Torah portion in Hebrew; read verses without vowels in Torah script and study some aspects of their meaning, and finally, will learn from them a relevant and doable mitzvah.

Marriage:  The clergy of KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation are available to officiate at the marriage of members of the congregation.  Officiation at the marriage of non-members is at the discretion of the individual clergyperson. Since each member of the clergy has her own requirements for conducting a wedding, it is best to contact the clergy directly.  When planning a wedding, members are advised to set a date with the clergy before making any other commitments (such as caterer, band, etc.).

Funerals:  The clergy of KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation are available to conduct funeral services for members of the congregation.  In the event of a death, please contact Executive Director Tal Rosen at 773.924.1234. The clergy of the congregation are also available to conduct or organize shiva minyans in the home following the funeral. Contact Rabbi Appel or Cantor Eskenasy for more information.
